DR. OKWARE

DIRECTOR GENERAL UNHRO
Professor Okware has served for more than thirty-five years as a highly-renowned public health professional, epidemiologist, educator and health advocate. He trained at Makerere University (MBChB, DPH); University of Minnesota (MPH) and the University of Bergen (PhD).

He is currently the Director General for the Uganda National Health Research Organization and consequently represents the institution as Commissioner on the Board of the East African Health Research Commission.

Previously, he worked with the Ministry of Health, Uganda in several capacities: as Commissioner Health Services /Community Health (Ministry of Health HQ, Kampala) responsible for Maternal and Child Health, malaria, environmental health and public health; and emergency preparedness and response at national level. Commissioner Health Services/Communicable Disease Control/HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB and other communicable diseases. Deputy Director of Medical Services/Public Health, Communicable Disease Control and HIV/AIDS, Ministry of Health, Uganda. Chairman and Director, National AIDS Control Program, Ministry of Health, Uganda; also program manager Malaria Control Program.

He has wide international experience where since 2011 to date he has been working as an expert on the World Health Organisation Committee on Health Research and Development.Board Member, Global Commission on AIDS, WHO/Geneva. Board Member, Advisory Committee, International AIDS Society, representing South America, Africa and the Middle East Arab countries. Board Member International Steering Committee, International Conference on AIDS and STDs.
